Teach English in Nanzhou Jiedao - Guangzhou Shi
This unit began by looking at the teaching of vocabulary. I learnt that when choose words to introduce to learners vocabulary one must take into account the frequency of the word used, the appropriability to the task and students among other things. I also learnt that students need to know the meaning, spelling, pronunciation, use and position of the word, among other things but do not need to know information such as the origin of the word. The unit furthermore discussed activities appropriate for each stage of the teaching process, engage, such as showing picture, study, such as using word searches and activate where students can role play or design their own objects using the language discussed in the lesson. This unit also covered grammatical structure and the elements that need to be considered when teaching this. For example, students also need to know the meaning of various grammatical structures, as well as the form they take and when various structures should be used. I also learnt that similar activities to the vocabulary lessons can be used in teaching grammatical structures, such as to introduce grammatical structures regarding holidays pictures of various holidays and advertising brochures can be used for the engage stage. Additionally in the study stage, activities such as getting students to unscramble jumbled sentences can be used. Lastly in the activate stage, role play can also be used to encourage students to use the new language they have just learnt. I also learnt in this unit that it is important that students understand the different functions of language, such as inviting, refusing, agreeing, or suggesting. This is something I had not initially thought about as being important but after this unit I can now see how it is. It was shown in this unity that all different types of ESA teaching can be used for each section, such as straight arrow, boomerang and patchwork, depending on what activities are being used. For teaching language function a fun game to use during the activate stage was shown to be a game where one student invites the other student out to do something and the other student must refuse, until either the one student runs out of invitations or the other runs out of excuses. The one who runs out of things to say first is the loser. This unit was helpful in showing how different areas of teaching can be approached and gave further clarification on how best to use the different forms of ESA teaching and highlighted that they are versatile.
