I have learned the various parts of speech in the English language. I learned that any sentence must have at least a subject and a verb. The subject or noun and a verb can be further broken down into various types of nouns and verbs depending upon the details of how it is used. Nouns are various in type and category as are verbs. I learned that the most common verbs are also irregular and must be memorized by students of English. Adjectives describe nouns and can be used to compare nouns by adding ER or EST at the end. There also can be irregular forms of how comparative and superlative adjectives are formed. Articles are simple but are specific to how they are used whether they are indefinite or definite. Definite articles have many rules of usage depending on whether they are used with geography or describing a general or more specific concept along with whether the nouns of the definite articles are plural or not or countable or not. The most basic forms of Verbs were described as 'Base or Infinitive', 'Simple past', 'Past Participle' and 'Present Participles' and there was a long list of examples of irregular verbs that students of English must simply memorize because there are no common rules of how to form the irregular verbs; however the regular verbs to form the past simply use 'ed'. Auxiliary verbs help to form the sturcture and meaning of the main verb. There are only three: DO, HAVE and BE. Adverbs are numerous and can describe a verb or adjective. Depending on the type of verb they modify, adverbs may be placed in different parts of the sentence. Gerunds act like nouns and are always verbs with an 'ING' ending. There were many different lists of Pronouns all of which can be confusing but each has a specific function depending on whether or not they are possesive or whether they are acting like and adjective. Pronouns can also be reflexive. If a pronoun is possessive there are no articles or nouns that follow; this helps in differentiating them from possessive adjectives. Prepositions may be the most difficult to master because there are so many of them and they can be used in a multitud of ways that have no consistency. I would simiply help students understand and learn how to use prepositions simply through lots of practice and usage as I find them to be very difficult to understand how to use them in other languages that I study. Lastly, I learned about Conjuctions which glue words or concepts together. Conjuctions can be fun to use as they help to put together many phrases and concepts together in an organized way.
