Teach English in HongshAn Jiedao - Guangzhou Shi
This unit has taught me what and how a good teacher must be. Teachers have different roles and each role depends on the need, situation, or activity of the class. At the moment, I am able to apply the roles as a Manager/Controller, an Organizer, an Assessor, a Model, a Prompter, a Facilitator, and a Participant in instructing business conversation English to Japanese students online. As a Manager/Controller, I explain topics before they can do or answer certain activities. As an Organizer, I assign them roles in a dialogue/role-play to practice certain vocabulary words and expressions learned. As an Assessor, I give them evaluation based on their performance for a certain unit and tell whether they were able to achieve the lesson goal or not. As a Model, I tell them the correct pronunciation of words, the right parts of speech, the correct sentence patterns, and so on. As a Prompter, I help them get back on track when they lose the thread of what they were trying to say, or give them certain questions to elicit their opinions. As a Facilitator, I give them activities to do (e.g. writing business emails on their own and give feedback afterwards.) As a Participant, I play certain roles in dialogues with students for them to apply certain expressions learned in class. This lesson has reminded me of the crucial role that we play in our students' lives. We can make them or break them with the way we instruct and correct them in class. Correcting an error by focusing on their personality or habits can greatly affect their motivation. A good teacher should affirm the student's effort and encourage him/her to try again until an attitude of perseverance is developed. In this way, the student will realize that it is not about failing or making a mistake but having the attitude to overcome it. The teacher's affirmation of the student's effort also plays a vital role in building a positive and motivating attitude. The lesson on Student's Language Levels also helped me greatly since I do individual assessments of my students' English levels every after class. This will help me keep track of their progress as they continuously develop the four macro skills (listening, speaking, reading, writing) using the English language. Learning about the differences between a young learner and an adult learner also gave me fresh ideas and perspectives in handling students of various ages. This part of the lesson affirmed my personal observations about the attention spans and interest levels of learners as well as their motivations, learning experiences, nervousness, language awareness, behavior problems, and life experiences.
