Teach English in Daxin Jiedao - Guangzhou Shi
It is important to have good eye contact to establish a good rapport with students. It can also be used to encourage contribution or maintain discipline. Gesturing can be helpful when conveying the meaning of language, adding visual interest, or increasing the pace of the lesson. The more you vary your voice, the more effective it will be. You should use students' names when you organize activities, acknowledge students, indicate who should answer, or want the attention of a student. Students can work as a whole class, in pairs, on their own, or in groups. wWhole-class group work can create a sense of belonging and allows everyone to interact with each other, but it can difficult for shy students. Individual work allows for you to respond to individual differences and is less stressful, but it does not allow for student-student interaction. Pairwork is great for student talk time and is quick and easy to organize, but it can be noisy and students may try to revert to their native language. Group work encourages students to cooperate and negotiate in English, but it can take longer to organize and some group may dominate the group. The classroom can be organized in rows, circles/horseshoes, or separate tables. Whether you are sitting or standing can convey to the students the activity type, the teacher's role in the activity, and what the students are expected to do. When standing, you are able to see everyone, control the class, and move around, but it can be tiring and make students feel dominated. When sitting, you are able to relax control, have your materials at hand, and make the class more intimate. When writing on the board, you can minimize having your back turned by using the overhead projector, inviting students to write on the board, or writing board work prior to class or when the students are engaged in an activity. TTT provides students with natural, correct English that is specifically geared to students' ability, but does not allow students to talk. When giving instructions, you should use simple language, make sure everyone is listening, use visual cues, and check to see if the instructions were understood. You can establish rapport by doing an ice breaker activity, using pair- and group-work, being positive, showing personal interest in your students, and SMILING! Problem behavior can be prevented by being punctual, prepared, and fair, as well as returning homework promptly, showing your students respect, and making lessons interesting, and being enthusiastic about teaching. When responding to problem behavior, act immediately, focus on the behavior, keep calm, keep wit the school's disciplinary code, and don't go \"over the top\" with the rules.
