Teach English in Chepo Jiedao - Guangzhou Shi
Being a teacher also means dealing with difficult situations and problems and finding solutions how to make everything to look as well as possible. The first lessons can often be challenging for new teachers and make them nervous. However, it is important for the teacher to establish a good relationship with the students, and to establish rapport among them. There are two categories of classes: - New group: where students do not know each other and may not have a previous EFL experience, so the most important thing is finding a way for establishing rapport ; - Existing group: the students already know themselves and are familiar with EFL. During the first lesson it is inadequate for the teacher to use the book, instead he/she should try to: get to know the students, their needs and objectives, make a good relationship, determine the student?s level etc. There are numerous activities which teachers may use in order to have a good start: making a questionnaire, board games, pass the ball game, needs analysis etc. Warmers: start the class with a warm up activity to indulge the students in the new lesson. Activities that can be used are hangman, Pictionary, tongue twisters and memory games. Sometimes teachers face up with the problem of different levels group. Teachers have lots of materials which they can use in these classes. Choose one topic and use materials for the topic but in different level of difficulty. Or teachers can use the same materials but different tasks, group the stronger with weaker students etc. Large classes can be a huge problem, because not all of the students have the same interest and attention span, but it is useful if the teacher employees the following techniques: use worksheets, clarity, pair/group activities, choral repetition, appoint group leaders and a bit of humor. Classes where students use native language: no matter what, the teacher is the one who uses the L2 during the lessons. If the teacher wants the students to understand him/her the teacher should use appropriate level language, clear explanations and instructions, encourage the use of English, respond in English. The students will be reprimanded to use L2 if they see that the teacher is always reminding them. Reluctant students: some of the students may be shy or do not like to participate in the class. The teacher can use pair work which will allow students to practice in a safe environment; the students should have enough time to practice before the present; or give the role plays. Listening tasks: teachers should not avoid the listening tasks even though students find them difficult. Use lots of extra and supporting materials to make the listening activities easier for the students.
