Unit 9 focuses on lesson planning. While there are different opinions as to the necessity and ideal extent of lesson planning, a certain amount of preparation is necessary for smooth and effective classes. A well written lesson plan serves as an aid in creating a logical sequence in teaching, a working document for referral to in class, as well as a useful record of content taught and activities/materials used. In case of circumstances arising that require someone else to cover a class for you, your lesson plan will be essential for the teacher covering. Lessons plans should be kept simple and concise while following a set structure, containing a balance of skills being practiced, flexible and able to be adapted to the situation. Time estimates for each activity should be included to assist in keeping on schedule within the allotted class time. Preparations before class begins to ensure the smooth functioning of the lesson include: a quick run-through of the lesson plan, checking that all materials are present and organized, an equipment check, organization of seating and cleaning of the whiteboard, and, of course, being in the classroom before the students begin to arrive. Lesson plans should include both general information about the class and what should happen during the lesson. General information to be included are: the name of the teacher (and observer, if applicable), class number and level, classroom, estimated number of students, date and time. Next is the central language point for the class, learner objectives (and personal objectives, if writing lesson plan for oneself), materials and aids to be used, and anticipated problems. Following this is the actual plan for what will happen in the class, or procedure. Each activity should be marked with its phase, estimated timing and who will be interacting (teacher-student or student-student). Note that different teachers will include slightly different things within their lesson plans, and many schools will have specific requirements or official forms to use. If planning a sequence of lessons, flexibility, content review, overall goals and balance/variety will need to be taken into account. In order to maximize efficacy and results as well as keep track of ongoing issues and progress, teachers may wish to keep self evaluation records after the completion of each class. These are an effective method of monitoring both the class and one's personal progress, and may be required in some schools. I enjoyed this lesson very much and gained a lot from it. The forms provided were helpful and balancing compared with other forms I have previously encountered, and the tasks using the material in the appendix were a good practice and review.
