Unit 14 tackled the topic of course books and material, looking at authentic and created material, as well as standardized books provided by publishers. We discussed the benefits of each type of material and how to use them in the classroom. With authentic materials, teachers can use already existing material like newspapers, podcasts, tv shows and more to give students a look at every day language use that has not been structured for a graded ESL lesson, which will give them confidence when they learn how to understand it. Teachers can also create materials as supplements to lessons to make their lessons more unique and catered to specific students, whereas already established coursebooks may become too structured, predictable, or boring to students. The examples where particularly useful and the resources on how to find or produce your own materials were also quite helpful. I will use the information in the lesson to help ensure that I don't become a lazy teacher that relies too heavily on already created content in coursebooks.
