Teach English in Huangbailing Kenzhichang - Fuzhou Shi
In this unit we look at course books and lesson materials. The lesson materials can be described as either authentic materials or created materials. Authentic materials would be things such as; magazines, songs, menus, and so much more. These types of materials are usually designed for English learners since they are not graded for the level. With that being said they have to be chosen carefully. Authentic materials are typically used since they are real and can be rather interesting/motivational. They can also help the student gain more confidence when they understand them do to the fact that they aren't geared towards the level of the student. With there being a lot of authentic materials to choose from it is rather easy to make them geared towards student interest. Created materials for the most part designed by the teacher and tend to replace materials that are originally in the course book. These like crosswords, role-play cards, gap-fill activities, and so on would fall under the created materials category. These would differ from authentic materials because they can be geared toward the level of the students you are teaching. On further pages there are examples of created materials which is a great way to show how they should look and so n. It is very beneficial to have so for future reference when teaching classes. Course books are rather useful to a class because they usually come with a multitude of different things like; workbook, a teacher's book, and more. They provide a syllabus that is graded to level, has a decent balance of grammar, vocabulary, and skill works, and for teachers they provide tried and tested materials. With the advantages comes disadvantages of course. Course books can become rather boring to the students due to predictability, they are marketed to the general public so they can't pick specific student needs, and more. To make the best use of the book it would benefit the teacher to use created materials to replace materials in the book that don't fit well with the class, make sure you keep in mind what motivates the students, make sure you read the teacher's book to approach the book in a more critical manner. The teacher is always welcome to omit lessons that aren't beneficial to the class, replace those lessons that are omitted with ones that suit the class better, supplement by adding more lessons, and adapt the materials to the style that you feel more comfortable with as well as the students own comfort level. In all there is some much that goes into the lessons and they need to be well thought out. I feel like I have learned a lot especially about the set up of an ESA lesson.
