Having read this unit, we can talk about two types of media dissociated in a language class: textbooks and authentic documents of any kind: the Internet, audio, video, images, texts, songs, advertisements, etc. At present, the evolution of information and communication technologies has created a revolutionary effect on the use of materials in foreign language teaching. In the beginning, only textbooks were used in language classes. Today is the era of digital materials and the virtual world of internet use to the extent that it became somehow inevitable to use online tutorials in foreign language classes. Thanks to the use of all the multimedia and internet network possibilities available, it has become quicker to access authentic resources. Having already taught English for eight years, I do recall my first years of teaching relying on course books. A few years later, I started counting on more authentic materials and created a balance between what is available and what needs to be added, changed, simplified, or even more complicated. Lately, much of my teaching has been personally interwoven, relying on authentic resources. For instance, the function of online tutorial programs is multiple; they provide the ability to use the target language in a real and authentic environment, exemplify the themes in their contexts, contribute to the constitution of cultural references. They are both an irreplaceable source of information to bring social realities and cultural values of the country where the language target is used to the classroom.
