In this unit we covered the two classifications of learning materials, created and authentic, as well as how to select a textbook if given the opportunity along with its advantages and disadvantages. Created materials are anything that is made by the teacher or someone else with the purpose of practicing specific vocabulary or grammar. Examples are crosswords and role play cards. These methods are useful because they can be adapted to student's needs and help the teacher to be creative. Authentic materials are used to spark student interest in specific topics as well as give them practice with real material they will encounter in daily life as an English speaker. Authentic materials give the students confidence to go out into the world and utilize their language skills. When it comes to selecting a textbook it is important to consider some factors. One factor is methodology. Will the text allow for the lesson plan you desire. Textbooks have the disadvantage to dictating the lesson and we will want to select one that allows for our selected teaching method as well as a book that is relatable to the students and is suitable to their current language needs.
