Unit 14 details course books and lesson materials. This is a decisive topic in the ESL community, as some teachers swear by them while others may feel like they take too much away from the act of planning and implementing their own lesson plans. Course material may be authentic or created materials. Authentic materials are sourced natively from the English language such as a newspaper or journal. These are good in that they add variety and interest for the students but are usually quite difficult to choose material suitable for the English proficiency of the students themselves. Created materials are exactly that, they are created for the usage of ESL teachers. The advantage to this is that they are usually grade specific and are as well usually quite professionally made. However, they may actually be quite old or perhaps made for a general audience in mind. They also tend to become boring if they are the sole materials used in class. An ESL teacher may circumnavigate these issues by using a course text (either chosen or mandated) and then either omitting or adapting lessons with ancillary materials that better engage the students themselves.
