This unit provided a brief overview of the different types of materials that are used in the classroom: coursebooks, authentic materials, and created materials. More specifically, this unit described each of these, the pros and cons of using each, when it is appropriate to use them, and also gave examples of them. In particular, this unit juxtaposed the differences between authentic and created materials - and gave several real-life examples of different kinds of created materials - and then went into more depth in describing coursebooks and the different considerations that teachers must contemplate when deciding how to use them, and in determining which to use. In addition, this unit described how a teacher often will/should use a combination of all of these different materials in the classroom in order to meet their specific students' needs - this discussion was particularly useful for me in that it gave me an opportunity to evaluate the kinds of materials that have been used in my classes, how my teachers and I have been using our coursebooks, and how we may improve and diversify our usage of materials for English teaching.
