This unit discussed the different groups that teachers may have to teach at some stage. Firstly the different types of beginner groups were outline such as absolute beginners, who are students who have never studied English before in their lives, and false beginners who have studied English but not much and may have studied it a long time ago and so have not retained much information, among other groups of beginners. The other type of teaching was one to one, where the unit gave a number of tips of how this differs from teaching groups, such as students may get tired and may cover more content in a lesson than groups are able to. Tips included sharing phone numbers as cancellations are frequent occurrences, as well as ensuring that you have over prepared the lesson so that you do not run out of content for the student for the lesson. The unit also showed that individual lessons are great for increasing talk time, but that the whole lesson should not only revolve around conversation but that it should still follow a lesson plan involving study and grammar. The next group was the Business English group, which can involve students from many ages and levels of English. The unit discussed how it is not necessary to have a wide knowledge of the industry, and that you are not trying to teach the learners Business, but rather the English required in their specific industry, such as in the hotel industry you will need to focus on relations with guests, such as introducing, giving tours, explaining rules or dealing with complaints. The unit also showed various tips and considerations for teaching children, who are shown to be naturally curious and this therefore makes them motivated learners. Tips on how to deal with discipline were given in the unit, which are very useful, such as not to shout as this will antagonise children rather than help, as well as to reduce boredom by always being prepared and not letting activities drag on for too long. In all groups it is strongly recommended that English talk time is encouraged as much as possible, and that the teacher should try and curb the amount of native language spoken in the classroom. For teaching business english the unit showed that a needs analysis is important, which is essentially understanding what the students require from the course and what they wish to be able to accomplish by the end of this. This will help the teacher with what to focus on as well as ensuring that students remain motivated, and so is an important element of teaching these kinds of groups. Evaluation and progress reports are also shown to be important, as this also shows the students that you are taking their individualised needs into account, whilst still focussing on overlapping needs of everyone in the course.
