This unit has been one of the most difficult ones since doing TEFL. The unit was very interesting I have learned many new things however it was difficult for me to understand some parts. The unit 13 talked about teaching pronunciation and phonology. There were areas such as stress, rhythm, intonation and the International Phonetic Alphabet. Internation is basically the variation in volume and pitch in a sentence, whereas stress is more focused with individual words in a sentence. It depends whether we are telling someone something or we are asking someone. There are patterns such as fall/rise, rise/fall intonation. What usually happens is that when you finish the sentence the intonation falls. However if we are asking something, the final intonation rises. Finally we also have that kind of intonation that is basically flat. Usually when the sentence is short. There are various techniques for indicating and teaching intonation. We can teach it by using nonsense words, also by guess tour with our hands to indicate high or low pitch, by humming or singing to hear the stress. We can also use as a tool the board and write straight or angled arrows. When it comes to stress, there are basically some stronger parts of the world. All multi- syllable words in English have at least one part that is stressed. Too simple rules about stress are: 1) One word has only one stress 2) we can only stres syllables (not individual vowels or consonants. Why do you look at some sentences, they've got like of stress. Pronouns, articles and prepositions are normally unstressed. There are various techniques for indicating I'm teaching our students stress. We can do it for example by contrastive stress or by gestures, we can show it on the board one underlining the words , or we can use stress marks etc. For a known ways of sound joining in English are linking, sound dropping, sound changing, extra littering. Next topic of this unit was the phonemic alphabet. Phonetic alphabet is basically an alphabet in which we can find how to pronounce particular letter or letters. Articulation was a section focused on the speech organs, place of articulation, we've got various physical location of a phoneme's production. Velar, Palatal Alveolar, Dental, Bilabial etc. Manner of Articulation is defined as a difference between for example constants. We've got plosive, Fricative, Nasal, Lateral, Afficate, Approximant Teaching techniques for the pronunciation of individual sounds can be for example peer dictation, using our own mouth, visual, tongue twisters and phonemes. When should we teach pronunciation? Some teachers like to do it through the whole lesson others prefer to slot a certain amount of particular pronunciation of work into each of his lessons, others just do it when they see there's need to do it.
