This unit discussed the roles of both teachers and learners. It also looked at things to keep in mind when teaching adults as well as thinking about their wants and needs. Finally, it covered a recommended teaching methodology. There are many roles a teacher plays: instructor, facilitator, mentor, psychologist, counselor, and policeman. A set of responsibilities will come with the employment contract. There are a variety of learners, such as individuals who are paying for private tuition directly to you or to the company you work for, or groups within a company taught at a language school. The student groups may be organized by workplace departments, so their language abilities may vary and they might not be attending classes of their own motivation. Advantages of teaching adults include: a higher level of maturity, greater attention spans, and an ability to more easily form bonds with the teacher. In general, the behavioral problems associated with teaching children are lessened, thus creating a more pleasant and relaxed classroom environment. Disadvantages of teaching adults include: greater internal pressures for students, adults can be more self conscious about certain activities, students may have difficulty in adjusting to being a student again, and that lessons may take place after a work day. When it comes to teaching groups or individually, there are both advantages and disadvantages. In one-to-one clients, advantages include pacing the lesson for the student and students get full attention. Disadvantages include no opportunities for group or pair work. When teaching groups with different levels of ability, it?s important to teach at a level that all students can understand. Activities can also be graded and pair students of roughly the same level together. Four skill areas covered in business English course and any other general English course are: listening and reading (receptive skills), and speaking and writing (productive skills). Listening skills are likely used in meetings or phone calls. Reading is often used in mail, memos, reports, or business publications. Speaking is used in phone calls, messaging, and presentations. Writing is used in mail, meetings, presentations, reports, and messages. There are several theories of learning: Grammar Translation, Audio Lingualism, The Silent Way, Task-based Learning, PPP, and ESA (Engage, Study, Activate). The ESA method can be follow a Straight Arrow lesson, Boomerang lesson, or Patchwork lesson. I learned about the different pros and cons of teaching adults compared to younger learners. While behavioral issues are not issues, motivating business people after a long day's work can be. Classes may not be divided by language levels but there are ways to deal with the situation to ensure all students' needs are met.
