This unit covered all aspects of Classroom Management, which is the skill of organizing and managing the class, having a friendly, relaxed manner, and maintaining discipline. Eye contact, gesture, and the voice were covered. These include: uses for eye contact, uses for gesture and how to tailor vocal volume and language level to the current situation. The pros and cons of a variety of student grouping methods were then covered. These include: whole-class grouping, students working individually, pairwork, and groupwork. Classroom arrangement is also a key part of classroom management. Different setups offer different pros/cons, depending on several factors. Some possible arrangements are: orderly rows, circles and horseshoes, separate tables, the teacher's position. Instructions should be given using visual clues, and simple, consistent language. It's more effective to have students repeat instructions back, rather than simply reply that they understand. Discipline should be maintained in the classroom. The unit described reasons for problem behavior, as well as techniques to prevent and respond to it. A few other things that need to be considered as factors in managing the class are: writing on the board, giving individual attention, and teacher/student talk times, and establishing rapport.
