The primary content of this course was to describe teacher and student relationships and the roles that both the teacher and the student can and often do take. The material shows a variety of necessary roles that the teacher must be able to assimilate to at various points in teaching, corresponding to the appropriate times and material. It also shows the variety of students and some of the challenges faced with various ages and/or backgrounds, as well as a need for a measure of deeper cultural understanding on the part of the teacher so as to cater the information and practice thereof to the culture he/she is teaching in. Toward the end of the text was a brief summation of the various nationally recognized stages of learning into which all of the students are categorized, as well as a note of clarification that the understanding of what a certain level is in one area may not be the same as it is in another; again pointing out the need for understanding and cultural awareness. I appreciated the thoughtfulness considering the motivation in particular, as well as the stumbling blocks faced by students depending on age and background. This helps to think more about how to engage the students in a meaningful way that could draw them into being better students and encouraging them to learn more effectively.
