Teach English in Nancheng Jiedao - Dongguan Shi
In unit 10, I have watched 2 videos of the same teacher giving an English class in different ways and with a different attitude. With the first lesson not being so effective as the second one. In the first lesson, the teacher did not take time to learn the students names, neither did he take the time to present himself. Whereas in the second lesson, he asked the students to write their names on a piece of paper for him to be able to acknowledge throughout the lesson. Which he did. He continually, used their names and made an effort in pronouncing them. He also presented himself as \"Mark\" at the beginning of the lesson. This is really an important aspect in each lesson, because when you take the time to learn the students names and to call them by their names, they will feel more comfortable around you. The participation in the lessons, will also increase. Throughout both lessons, the teacher used a straight arrow ESA lesson plan. But in the first one, his objective for the students was not reached, because he did not explain clearly what he wanted for each activity. He started with a grammatical term that the students did not recognise, and which he did not bother to explain properly like in the second lesson. During his Study phase, he made the students feel incompatible as he continually said that \"the activity is so easy\". Thus, the class participation was lowered drastically as the students were to scared to give a wrong answer. For the activate phase, his explanation of his objective for the activity was not clear at all. He spoke to fast and did not use/explain the difficult vocabulary. I learnt from the first lesson, that I should take time to learn the names of the students. I should speak slow and clearly, using the correct vocabulary for the level of my class. Gestures should be apart of my lesson all the time to keep the attention of the students, which will raise class participation. Also, I should prepare for each lesson, and give clear instructions for my activities. I should keep it fun and have a friendly attitude towards the lesson and students. Like in the second lesson with this teacher. In the second lesson, his straight arrow ESA lesson plan was clearly visible. He ushered the students well into understanding what modal auxiliary verbs are. He spoke clearly, slowly and used vocabulary that the students understood. He also use gestures and pictures into explaining the verbs or unknown words which kept the class participation high. During the study phase he monitored well and didn't leave the students feeling like they cant do this activity. He kept their attention and was friendly and smiled the whole time! In the activate phase he clearly brought forth that which he wanted the students to do. He had a clear example of his own made up animal and gave the instructions clearly without being intimidating.
