Teach English in Daojiao Zhen - Dongguan Shi
In this final unit, we learned about the first lesson, how to deal with mixed level groups, large classes, and reluctant students. We also looked about warmers and the difficulties with listening text. The first lesson shouldn't rely on the course book and instead should be used to build rapport and find out what the students want from the course. Finally the teacher should find out what level of English the student are currently at. It also helps to know if the group is an existing group or if they are meeting each other for the first time. This will show the level of comfort they have with each other to work in groups. The teacher can use \"pass the ball\" or \"tell us about...\" game to build rapport between students if they are a new group; the teacher should also participate in these games to build rapport with the rest of the class. While the students are playing these games, the teacher should note the level of English the students are speaking for future lessons. The teacher can then use warmers to motivate students into the lesson. Some warmers include; hangman, pictionary, and tongue twisters. This can also be a good study phase and the teacher should, again, watch the students level of English when doing these activities. A teacher might run into a class that has different levels of English speakers. Some ways to work with this class, without making it too hard for the weaker students and too boring for the more well versed is, the teacher can use different materials or use the same materials but for different tasks. For example, if you use the same materials, the teacher may ask the stronger students to go more in depth with the lesson. The teacher can also pair stronger students with weaker ones although the teacher must make sure the stronger student is not doing all of the work for both students. Large classes can also pose a problem as there is only one teacher and he/she cannot give each student the time that is required in such a short class. There are many solutions to this problem, for example, using worksheets, pair work, and group leaders can help as worksheets will keep the class from becoming too loud with everyone talking at once for certain activities. Also, pairwork and group leaders can also help by having the students teach each other while the teacher only stepping in when needed; this also lowers the volume in the room as there should only be a few people talking in a group at a time. Pair work is also important for reluctant students. This will keep them engaged and more motivated to participate if they have more confidence practicing in a small group before presenting in front of the whole class. Finally, difficulty with listening text seems to be a problem for every nationality; it is important to still do these exercises. Also, the teacher must make sure that the problem is actually with the listening skills as opposed to the quality of sound of the material, for example.
