Accuracy is directly refers to correctness of the output. Fluency is about free and coherent use of the language. Both accuracy and fluency are of equal importance. To encourage students to speak the teacher may use 1) personal stories and experience e.g.: When my daughter and I were visiting Spain, we went from Tarragona to Barcelona to see the Holy Family Cathedral. While being inside the building we absolutely unexpectedly met a cousin and his wife. They were a newly married couple then and were on their Honey Moon cruise on the Mediterranean at that moment. Their cruise ship had stopped in Barcelona only for four hours. That?s one of the most striking coincidences I?ve ever had in my life so far. Have you ever had any strange, wonderful, frightening, funny, inspiring (prompts are on the board) coincidences? Then cards with examples of unusual coincidences may be given out, lexis drilled and facts discussed, then students can present them as if in a radio or TV show, discuss them and choose the most unbelievable/funny etc. Getting students interested in the topic can be a real challenge and Marvell?s characters may be really helpful. For example, I had a series of lessons on the types of houses. First I asked if the student (I give private lessons) remembers where famous superheroes live. Then we studied the topic vocabulary, advantages and disadvantages. Then the student described her favourite character (which was Tony Stark) and his place of living. The final activation included two writings: the report on Tony Stark?s high-tech apartments and ?her own interview? with the superhero. Some examples of classroom games. Fictionary/ Call my bluff ? guess the definition of obscure word. Each round one player selects and announces a word from the dictionary and others compose a fake definition for it. The definitions are collected and read aloud. The players vote on which definition the believe to be correct. OR the announcer gives three definitions of the chosen word (one correct and two fake), teams discuss and pick out one definition. Charades. Members of two teams mime things in turns (books, plays, objects, quotations, people, films etc.), others are trying to guess and asking questions ?is it?.?? Consequences. Students in turns write a story in give or take this order: Adjective ( for a man) ? Man?s profession ? Man?s Name ? Adjective (for a woman) ? Woman?s profession ? Woman?s Name ? Where they met ? What he was wearing ? What she was wearing ? What he said to her ? What she said to him ? The consequences ? What the world said. The characters in the game are variable. Truth or dare ? in this game is crucially important to avoid any sensitive matters. Wanted -- Give out a set of portraits and a set of descriptions of crimes and people (shouldn't be obvious and direct).
