Tests are very important for monitoring a student's progress or determining prior to the beginning of a course how developed their language skills are. What I found helpful in this unit was the detailed discussion between the different types of tests, especially the difference between diagnostic and placement tests. Diagnostic tests are really important in determining the planning of a course based on what your students already know. I also enjoyed the discussion on progress tests and the debate about how effective they are. I think elements of a progress test are necessary, but they may not always accurately show the development of one's language skills.
