This is a more advanced topic of English language, but it is important for students to learn if they are going to be communicating more nuanced topics in English. Conditionals express ideas that are possibilities, and depending on the timing of the action taking place, it will affect the tense used. Reported speech refers to taking a comment that was made in the past and relaying it to someone else. This means a change of tense, from present or future to past. These changes will have to be taught through memorization or other drills for students starting out learning about reported speech.
