English has its own inventory of sounds that is distinct from most other languages. For native speakers, learning a new English word is often a straightforward process of putting together well known sounds. TEFL Teachers must understand, however, that manipulating and producing completely alien sounds requires much guidance. Additionally, there are certain unspoken rules of English such as the placement of stresses that native speakers never had to be taught explicitly, since they grew up in an English speaking environment. Nevertheless, these rules are incredibly important for providing the correct interpretation of sentences which are otherwise ambiguous.
