The productive skills of speaking and writing are especially important when you're trying to encourage creativity and independent thought among your students. Allowing the students to express themselves not only improves their English language skills, but also trains them to think in a new way. I consistently spend a lot of time on these productive skills. Reading the unit, I learned new methods and approaches to use to maximize what my students can gain from speaking and writing. I was reminded that I should monitor discussions instead of controlling them. In addition, I should always give the students some background information before starting on a topic.
