This unit has briefly described the four basic skills in any language and discussed on the receptive skills which are those of reading and listening. I learnt that the motive derived from reading or listening is solely dependent on the purpose of reading. For instance a football fan reads a news paper just to see results of past matches while English learners read to understand the language. I learnt that reading has fewer problems relative to listening as the listener has only one chance to listen and not time to digest the texts. I learnt some ways to reduce some of these problems, one of which is to carefully select text to suit the level of the students.
