Unit eighteen takes a finishing look at grammar for ESL teachers with the discussion of modals, passive voice, and phrasal verbs. These supplements to English verb use are nuances of language that may be more difficult for learners to adopt, but nevertheless should be taught firmly and incorporated into conversation. Modals are the key to applying formality, certainty, ability or preference. Passive voice allows new speakers to deliver a clause without expressly placing the agent in typical subject-verb-object structure. Phrasal verbs are joint words describing a verb including particles which are typically prepositions, but also occasionally adverbs or both.
