Writing and speaking are productive language skills. Writing is often neglected in lessons, but is so important to include in class, not just in homework, so the teacher can monitor and give feedback. Handwriting, spelling, and punctuation need to be taught and practiced, but students need opportunities for creative expression as well, through writing. Some speaking activities will be for practicing accuracy and are usually in the study phase, some will be for fluency and are usually in the activate phase. Games are also great to use in class, because they are fun, engaging, provide practice, and students of all ages typically enjoy them. Twenty questions, Jeopardy, Pictionary, and Hangman are some examples of games that can be used to practice writing and speaking in the classroom.
