Receptive skills are skills by which student receive information and these are reading and listening. Different types of approaches can be utilised: 1) Predictive Skills ? e.g. predicting content from headline 2) Specific information ? scanning ? listen or read for specific information 3) General idea ? skimming ? listen for the gist of the content 4) Detailed information ? to understand everything in detail 5) Deduction from context ? need to understand or deduce meaning of words or phrases from the context in which we hear them e.g. no smoking sign ? not just information ? also an instruction. It is furthermore important to choose subjects that are appropriate for proficiency, interest be they either authentic or non-authentic materials.
