This unit brought out several things I had not considered before - such as how authentic materials might be overwhelming for beginning students, and that we should not use course books only, but should adapt, replace or supplement the material in the course books to best serve our particular group of students. The video WAS a little outdated tho, who uses cassette tapes anymore? hehehe.This unit helped me appreciate how important it is to provide context when teaching/testing receptive skills. Students need to be able to contextualise the material, and be pre-taught words that may be unfamiliar to them. After studying this unit, I also became aware of the disadvantages of using authentic texts with certain level learners. Additionally, I found the examples very useful.
