Production skills in this context are speaking and writing and both these skills require a level of accuracy and fluency ? the correctness according to grammar and the ability to speak fluently, respectively. Writing skills also require a number of other considerations i.e. ? Grammar- grammar can differ from speaking to writing e.g. contractions are often not used. ? Vocabulary - more formal vocabulary is often required. ? Spelling ? must be correct and English is not a phonetic language and therefore spelling can be a challenge for students as words that sound the same will not be spelt the same e.g. bow & bough. ? Handwriting is important even though it is s personal thing to an individual; it is important to remember that students may use a different alphabetical system and will need help with forming the letters. ? Punctuation & Layout ? students may be used to writing from right to left and some languages have different punctuation or no punctuation at all. ? Creative writing often there is little desire to write as students would rather focus on speaking. ? Situational ? formal letter would be different to a postcard.
