This unit, managing classes, covers strategies methods and techniques for organizing and managing the class such as what roles to take depending on the activity and situation and how to maintain discipline while also keeping the environment relaxed. It begins with pointers on how to use eye contact, gesture, voice and the names of student's. Next, it discusses the pros and cons of different grouping arrangments including: whole-class, individual, pair work and group work. It also discusses different physical arrangements of the classroom such as: rows, circles/horseshoes, separate tables as well as what the teacher's position should be during different activities. It also includes advice on how to write on the board in a way that reduces the amount of time with your back to the class. It also advises on how to give individual attention to students equally and how to find a good balance between teacher talk time and student talk time. Tips for making instructions effective include: using simple language, being consistent, using visual clues and checking that students understand. The unit also stresses the importance of establishing a rapport between the teacher and students and between the students themselves.
