Different teaching methodologies exist that affect the way a lesson may be structured and the types and focus of activities that the teacher may employ. The Engage-Study-Activate methodology is considered an effective methodology and consists of three stages that may be completed in that order or the teacher is free to repeat stages in between as needed. The engage stage gives students a chance to discuss, become interested in or familiar with the target language, the study stage is where new language is introduced and necessary corrections are made. During the activate phase students can freely practice communicating using the language they have learnt. A variety of activities and exercises can and should be used during these stages to prevent classes from becoming repetitive and boring. Correcting student mistakes and errors should be done carefully. If students recognize and error was made, where and how to correct it, it may be best to allow them to correct their own mistakes, hints can also be given to assist them. If the mistake or error severely interferes with their understanding or future progress and they cannot correct it on their own it may however be appropriate for the teacher to directly correct it in a manner that will not result in the embarrassment of the student who made the error/mistake.
