This unit covered how to teach beginners, individuals, young learners, business English or English for a specific purpose, and monolingual or multilingual classes. I learned that when working with beginners you have to be extremely careful to go slow, be clear, control your language, keep all communication in English, and be flexible to suit their needs. With individual students, I learned that you should start with a needs analysis form, be willing to work with the student's wants but also firm with what will help the student the most in the long run. When teaching young learners, it's important to be clear, expressive, use repetition, lots of encouragement, and keep it fun/engaging. When teaching business English, it is not necessary to be experienced in the business, be ready to slow the pace or adapt for working adults, try to stick with what the student's need, and have the students do a needs negotiation in order to get on the same page. With monolingual or multilingual it is important to have the student's support and motivation from the beginning by stating your rationale for the class. Be careful of where to place yourself in the class or where/when to move around, make sure the students have seen a clear model and know the English necessary for activities before starting are things I also learned.
