Unit 11 covered the two receptive skills - reading and listening. The two motives for reading and listening are: 1. For a purpose (Ex. listening to instructions on a video recorder). 2. For entertainment (Ex. listening to a sports broadcast). Interestingly, according to the lesson, reading and listening are based on our pre-existing knowledge. There are five types of specialist skills: A. Predictive skills, B. Specific information - scanning, C. General idea - skimming, D. Detailed information, and E. Deduction from content. Some student problems can arise from how long the sentence(s) are, the word length, and the number of unrecognizable words in the text/dialogue. A few ways to overcome these obstacles are to pre-teach difficult, but not all, vocabulary, and to select texts carefully based on the level of the class and authenticity of the material (authentic vs. non-authentic texts). It also helps if a teacher's students are personally interested in the topic. Finally, the tasks should be appropriate for the level of the class and also be achievable, with a good amount of effort. A few examples of possible activities are jigsaw reading and jumbled texts. Overall, unit 11 was an interesting lesson about receptive skills - reading and listening, which included methods to overcome potential student difficulties.
