Teach English in ShAnwei Zhen - Chongzuo Shi
Rounding out the grammatical forms for the course, the unit on modals, phrasal verbs, and passive voice provides a primer on some of the more challenging aspects of the English language to teach to English language learners. While native speakers tend to understanding most usages freely through consistent listening and usage of such phrases and grammatical forms, teaching the theory behind the differences requires closer study. In particular, the chart for the auxiliary modals on pages 2-3 presented the variety of differences in usage, may of which I had not encountered, used, or studied even in my own English learning in elementary school. However, the chart and its example usages was helpful to illustrate the need to thoroughly explain the details of the form to new students. However, what this lesson also tells me is that a large part of English learning will have to be done through real life examples, that mimic actual English language usage. Particularly for speaking quickly and fluently, being able to automatically know which auxiliary to use to reflect certainty or obligation or how to emphasize the action rather than the agent is needed beyond the theory or textbook explanation. Constant practice and noting of instances in which it arises (as noted in the chapter) is important for students? growth.
