Teach English in Shangying XiAng - Chongzuo Shi
This unit offered great insight into the way a teacher should and should not conduct a lesson. The first video was painful to get through because the teacher had a terrible attitude and did nothing right for the duration of the lesson, all while continuing to write on the board with a pen that sounded like a torture instrument. While watching the first video I noticed so many problems with the lesson. Aside from the general demeanor of the teacher, he used complicated language, had his back to the class while teaching, didn't lay out expectations whatsoever, and responded to questions in a dismissive manner. The students were obviously confused but the teacher made no effort to simplify his language or try to explain the point of the lesson aside from writing examples on the board. He didn't engage the students at all and instead just kept repeating \"It's easy\" which resulted in them losing interest and feeling too intimidated to ask questions. The second lesson was much better and although the teacher should have made the Create an Animal activity more clear to exclude real animals, the students were able to complete the task because the entire lesson time had prepared them for it. In the second video I was able to recognize some methods, such as eliciting with pictures and gestures, that I use when teaching.
