Unit 5 discussed the different classroom structures and dynamics teachers must be aware of to create a conducive learning environment for students. This includes a range of topics from classroom setup and seating arrangements, down to the amount of eye contact or standing/sitting position a teacher should use at different stages of a lesson. The most important takeaways from this unit were that teachers must maintain order in the classroom and can do so through consistency and being reasonable-- not losing their temper, not singling students out for misbehavior, following through on threats, etc. Also, that teachers body language and class set up sets a foundation for class participation and behavior. Teachers who maintain eye contact while giving a lesson and distribute it evenly can encourage students to participate, acknowledge students in the classroom, maintain their attention, etc. Teachers who stand while giving instruction and sit while students do individual activities maintain a balanced presence in the classroom, so students do not feel like they are always being watched or controlled, but also behave properly during the Study phase of the class. Lastly, classroom set up, be that in a horseshoe, in groups, or in rows, can alter students attention spans, and their ease of collaboration and participation.
