Good teachers should fulfill multiple roles in their classroom. These roles include being a manager, organizer, assessor, prompter, participant, tutor, facilitator, model, and observer. Each role is unique and contributes to student learning in different ways. Rotating among these roles is very important in order to meet the needs of all students. Good teachers should also be aware of learning differences among their students in relation to their age, English level, and culture. Young learners developmentally can learn languages more easily than adults, but often times adults have more motivation, longer attention spans, and better behavior. Students` English levels will determine not only the content and difficulty of their learning material, but also how the teacher will communicate with them. Cultural background also plays a role in how students learn. Different cultures promote different values. For instance, a student from an Asian country might be more serious about their studies, but might be less outgoing when it comes to class participation. I am currently an ALT (assistant language teacher) in a Japanese high school. This lesson has helped me look more critically at the different roles a good teacher should play and why each is important. I want to work harder at incorporating these roles into my lessons.
