This unit introduced the different special groups that can be English language students. Beginners include those who have no language experience, false beginners, adult beginners, young learners, and those without knowledge of the Roman alphabet. In addition to beginners, special groups also include individuals who want to learn one-on-one, young learners, those who want to use English in their business, and classes with monolingual and multilingual first languages. In teaching beginners, several things to keep in mind include keeping lessons visual, use questions and verbal repetition drills, be supportive and praise as often as possible, and don?t overcorrect students. Teaching individuals should include a needs analysis, concentrating on the student?s interests, and varying activities and the approach. Instructors who teach young learners should constantly praise them, use repetition, refer to individuals, prepare lots of activities, and keep it fun. Finally, with Business English teachers should do a level test of each group member, do a needs analysis of what they want to know by the end of the course, do a group needs negotiation to talk about what they want to learn together, plan out the syllabus based on that feedback, test and evaluate the students? progress, and do a post-course evaluation.
