Discipline in the classroomTeachers need to have a discipline system in order to encourage appropriate student behavior. According to Guillaume, there are four main rules in order to create a ?warm and respectful classroom.? The four main rules are as follows: 1. Treat all students with respect and dignity- I will create an environment of respect and dignity by embracing each others? differences, learning about the students? cultures, and allowing them to express their opinions and ideas. In other words, I will actively listen to their feelings by showing interest, separating their feelings from my own, and looking for nonverbal signals. Moreover, I will respond to their behavior by addressing their behavior not their personality, correcting them privately, using I-messages and hints, reminding them of their strengths, modeling emotional control, using humor, and apologizing if I make a mistake. 2. Always prevent misbehavior- I will actively prevent misbehavior by having a meaningful curriculum that engages them in learning with various interesting activities. Throughout the year, I will observe their development, motivate them, establish my authority in the class, tell them clearly my expectations, and anticipate their behavior. I will also use non-verbal communication, such as gestures and physical proximity. 3. View discipline as a way to help students develop independence- I will provide opportunities for the students to develop independence by offering choices and having consequences. At the same time, I will address their behaviors in ways that encourage self-control by talking to them and allowing them to correct themselves by giving them a signal. 4. Approach discipline in various methods and levels- I will approach discipline in different ways by considering the group size, addressing several discipline issues simultaneously, using eye contact and questioning the behavior, and redirecting the misbehavior. I will follow these rules, so that I can create a friendly environment for my students. By following these rules, I will build a classroom community, in which my students feel comfortable to be in my class and feel comfortable to be around their peers and me. My classroom community will help them succeed in my classroom by not feeling afraid to practice speaking in the English language, ask questions, participate in class discussions and activities, helping others, and behaving appropriately. Basically, I will use a combination of the following two discipline models: the Canter model to assertively take charge; and the Fred Jones model to use body language, create incentive systems, and provide efficient help. These two models emphasize on clearly stating rules and expectations; applying positive consequences when expectations are met and negative consequences when rules are not met; and being assertive rather than passive or hostile. One example of a positive consequence I will use is that I will place a handful of marbles in a jar when the whole class does what they are supposed to do. If the jar is filled by the end of the week, all of the students will get a prize, such as a sticker, pencil, bookmark, etc. Another type of consequence is that I will distribute four ?money cards? to each student. If the student misbehaves, I will take a money card away for the week. If this same student does something exceptional, I will give the money card back. The purpose of these money cards is to have them behave appropriately and to always have four cards at all times. If they have all four at the end of the week, I will give them a prize. Overall, I will use these two models to approach discipline in the authoritative way, in which I will have high structure and high justification.
