This course has been valuable in many ways. It was a great way for me to get back into lesson planning and thinking about teaching strategies after a year away from work. It has also been a wonderful refresher on english grammar with the added dimension of teaching it to non-english speaking students. The enjoyment and challenge was enhanced by the fact that I learnt italian as an english speaker in an immersion course in Italy last year. This has given me many insights into learning another language and being a student rather than a teacher. During this course I was reminded many times of what it felt like to be talked at in a foreign language and not have any idea of what?s going on. Having taught in remote indigenous schools for a couple of years, it has been great to have to think about creative ways to convey complex grammatical information in an engaging way. Breaking up the lesson into Engage, Study and Activate segments has also provided me with a better structure than the one I was using. Some of the resources I now have as a result of this course will be very useful in the future. I am returning to teach in a remote indigenous school and feel better equipped to help them learn. I also feel inspired to do some further ESL training. And it?s a possibility that I?ll undertake some teaching of english in an Asian country or Pacific Island one day in the near future.
