The difference between teaching one to one and groupsIt has been understood that most students prefer one to one teaching as opposed to being taught as a group. In recent years one to one lesson have become more popular than large groups . students feel that the lessons can be more specifically geared towards them, the teacher can tailor the class according to the students specific pace, level and capacity and focus just on him instead of having to focus on a whole group of students, that can tend to take a lot of time just to complete a simple task. As one person might need more explaining, another person might take longer to write, another might make a lot of mistakes, another might have difficulty with pronunciation, so the teacher will have to take longer before moving on to another task or activity. Those are all things that slow down a group, so if the student is fast, or has little time available like business men, they could get very bored, impatient & feel like they are wasting the only little time they have available having to always wait on others. Most teachers instead find it much more challenging having to teach one to one, as a lot more is expected of them from the students viewpoint. Also because most teaching material is created for use within groups, teachers may have to take on the role of a student to adapt the activities for one to one teaching. Most teachers haven?t got the training that they need to teach one to one classes. Also, both teachers & students alike can tend to feel uncomfortable in a one to one situation. The student might get too familiar with the teacher & the teacher might find it difficult at times having to respond to comments made from the student that he/she strongly disagrees with, as they could have opposing opinions. Another major drawback in one to one teaching as opposed to groups, is the fact that a lot of games and activities will be difficult to do, as there?ll only be the teacher and the student, so that could make the class rather boring & monotonous without games & activities to spice it up. You could find some games & activities that only need two people but most of the games mentioned in any course book or classroom book or even this tefl course are all geared for a group of students, so will not be doable. Often schools don?t give a syllabus for one to one classes so it is more difficult to keep records of the classes & show the progress to the student. On the whole there appears to be some major differences between teaching one to one & teaching groups. I personally haven?t taught any class yet either one to one or in a group classroom setting. But certainly they both have their advantages and disadvantages for both students & teachers alike. But as teachers I think it is important that we learn how to adapt and use the skills we have and do our best to make either one to one or group classes as fun & interesting as we can.
