Personally, I have gained a lot. I used to teach english and Mathematics and my teaching methods were gained through experience. It was at an individual centre and I worked with individuals. No training was provided and I could only rely on what I have learned at school to help my students. At times, I find it difficult to explain to my students what they have to do. It was easier to deal with young learners as the teaching methods are similar but not for older students as their understanding is more mature. From this course, asides grammar, the different methodologies introduced would be helpful not only when I want to teach english but maybe another language and while conducting training. From seating arrangements, lesson planning, materials, I was never aware that there were so many resources out there. The lesson plan was really an eye opener. I always thought that it was alright just to follow the books provided (as I have experienced during my schooling days). As I go through the exercises and from my own learning experience, I realise that lesson plans do really make a difference. To make it easier, I put myself as a student and ask, would I enjoy this and would I be able to understand? It can be difficult but I feel that planning would be enjoyable once I get field experience. Recently, I conducted training and took into consideration the points I learned from this course. From before starting the training (projectors, presentation slides, potential questions) to conducting the training (intonation, speed of speech, gestures) to the end (which we ended up with a quiz), I found myself more prepared and less tense as I used to be. Besides the training, I started corresponding with students from different countries using emails. Using the ideas I have learned, I helped to correct their language usage. I found it rewarding as they provide feedbacks on my comments and how they think I could help them better. I have also encountered the problems noted in this course (language barriers, lack of vocabulary etc) and considered ways to make it easier for them to understand. As such, I would want to take the things I have learned in the course to enhance my career.
