Things I Wish I`d Known before Starting This CourseBefore beginning this course I had a false perception of what it meant to be a teacher. This lead me to take quite a disadvantaged point of view in regards to the course. How would I describe my attitude? Unappreciative and vain. I wish I had known the sacrifice and love needed for a teacher to perform efficiently. The average professional in the US works approximately 1777 hours each year1, while teachers average 2100-2200 hours per year2. Teachers work arduously to perform a very important task and personal accounts from both my parents (whom are teachers) collaborate that. I knew teaching was not a simple task; however, I was unaware genuine desire one needs to have to excel at such a pivotal profession. Through the experiences I have acquired teaching my own classes and the astonishing information learned in this course, I have come to a greater appreciation for the men and women all around the world whom have, selflessly, devoted their life to teaching. I wish I had known what it truly means to be a teacher before beginning this course, because knowing so would have lit a flame of bravery and dedication in honor of my fellow mates. The conviction to excellence I now have would have arrived a lot sooner; I would have fallen in love with teaching, as deeply as I have, sooner. Being a teacher means creating a better future for our world, reinforcing the society in which we live in, and changing the world one little brain at a time. Grammar, pronunciation, reading and writing, lesson planning and evaluations are things most people outside of the realm of teaching would pass off as arbitrary and unnecessary. However, once anyone, new or experimented, has dealt with those essential tools, they begin to understand how the love for teaching becomes embedded in us. Part of us changes and what may have been a burden once is now an expression of love, for what we do and who we are. Teaching stops being a career, profession, or job and becomes who we are and what we are. Someone who has experienced the bittersweet connection between life?s joys and teaching won?t ever look back and will never be satisfied. Every day will be bright and every class will mark the beginning of a whole new adventure, making us better and better. The passion and happiness expressed in a confident student?s countenance is the fuel that fires our desire to excel as human beings and professionals. students are our clay to mold into masterpieces, and even if our careers parallel van Gogh?s, Kafka?s or Dickinson?s, and our works go unnoticed until extreme circumstances, there will always be witnesses to our passion and the wonders reaped from our devotion. I know this is quite unorthodox and my response unexpected but teaching is much more than eight letters compiled to describe what millions of people do for a living. Teaching is a way of life, a love, and one of the word?s wonders. I wish I had known my life would change so drastically once I began teaching, but at the same time I?m glad I never understood my parents. The joy that fills my heart every time I step into a classroom is second to none. And that feeling of fulfillment creates substance where there were voids before. I love what I do.
