How the ITTT Course has Influenced my Personal Philosophy on EducationOver the past four years, I have had the privilege of working towards an English Studies degree at Nipissing University in North Bay, Ontario, Canada. My education at Nipissing University was very instrumental in my personal growth and perhaps the most profound lesson I learned was that individuals choose, build and sustain their own future. It is this lesson that serves as the foundation for my personal philosophy on education. In my opinion, one of the most important traits to possess as a teacher is passion. Personally, my passion for the English language stems from my Grade 10 English teacher. Her genuine enthusiasm for English Studies was compelling, leaving me with an overwhelming desire to emulate the experience for my future students. It would suffice to state that, not only was she a very informative instructor, she was a dedicated teacher. She taught her students in such a way that we were able to really comprehend the information, not simply memorise and regurgitate what was expected. It is my utmost belief that the education system should not only inform students, but it should also equip them with the necessary skills and confidence to pursue what they are passionate about. In taking the International tesol Teacher Training (ITTT) course I am, I believe, even better prepared to equip students with such skills when I am teaching abroad. The course has allowed me and taught me to think from the perspective of a teacher, rather than a student. This is very important as I have spent the majority of my life as a student. Furthermore, taking this course will reduce a large part of the initial shock when I first begin teaching and see how different it is to teach rather than be taught. As a teacher, I would teach the curriculum using engaging and easy to follow techniques, which I have learned throughout this course, in order to secure success for my students. I believe that in order to successfully teach students one must put oneself in the mindset of the student. I find that when I am able to place myself at the same level as the student I can then understand how to approach teaching the material and be successful in my attempts. This course has really enforced that making the student the center of the lesson, when possible, is key to becoming a successful teacher. Although this is a good strategy, taking this course has taught me that there are many strategies for teaching students and I know I will need to adapt certain teaching methods to suit the different learning capabilities of each student. While teaching English as a foreign language in korea, I know I would constantly be learning from my students, just as they will be learning from me. It is my firm belief that my approach to this experience will allow me to be successful in providing students with the necessary skills to move forward in their educational careers. As well, my approach to this experience after taking the tefl course will allow me to become a valued employee whose dedication to the job and the students will be an obvious priority.
