What I have personally gained from this course is a new understanding for some of the methods and theories used to teach english as a foreign language. What I mean in specific is the tendencies and habits which form proper language use rather than simply teaching a straight on grammatical or structured lesson. By using more developed ideas to plan a lesson, students can learn a lot more information easier, in a more enjoyable way. While I was familiar with opening exercises and warm up activities, I was not aware of how to make an ESA patchwork or boomerang lesson, and that new information will help me teach more complicated concepts in a layered, multi-faceted approach, hopefully benefitting the students immensely. I also learned some of the things I take for granted as a native english speaker. I consider my diction and vocabulary to be quite developed, however through this course I had to admit the fact that my technical knowledge of grammar is severely lacking. While I can write University level essays in History and Philosophy and receive high praise, I struggle with explaining something as simple as when to use passive and active voices. Elements of speech and grammar I use daily and no a consistent level are merely practical knowledge for me and it took this course to make me really analyze the mechanisms behind the language. That might seem odd as I am fluent in french and know all the verb tenses in french rather well, however I discovered that I could not translate that knowledge into english very well. I know that if I am to teach grammar points, I will have to do additional research and lessons to make sure I am fully versed in the material. I think I also gained a lot of knowledge around developing worksheets and drills for students. I can often think of games or activities, but my knowledge of creating work sheets was minimal. I plan on using this newfound knowledge to supplement any lessons I teach and allow the students ample opportunity to practice the new language points they have learned.
