classroom managementThe most important skill a teacher needs is classroom management. If a teacher is not in control of the class they will not be able to teach. If students are running wild, sleeping or unwilling to participate in the lessons. The teacher will be unable to effectively deliver the lesson for the day. students must learn to listen and behave before they can learn anything else. The skills associated with effective classroom management are only acquired with practice, feedback, and a willingness to learn from mistakes. Fundamental to effective classroom management are a teacher knowing what they do/don?t want from students, being able to show and tell the students what you want and expect from them, acknowledging compliance and quick discipline when necessary. When it comes to discipline the four steps a teacher should take are: 1. Address the behavior. 2. State the consequences for continuing the behavior. 3. Give an opportunity to cease the behavior. 5. If the behavior does not change consequences should be issued swiftly. Seating plans also come in handy in managing a classroom. The teacher can put strong and weak students together so the stronger student can be helpful to the weaker one. Also students that have proven to be disruptive and be separated to cause minimal disturbance to the class. The teacher should also make sure to know the students names. Using student?s names is incredibly important, it will make language examples or role plays lessons more engaging for the students. The more engaged a student is the less likely they are to act up and cause unnecessary ruckus. In preparing the room the teacher should make sure to remove anything that does not belong in the classroom or contribute to the learning at hand. Cell phones, comic books, drawings and other homework should not be in the classroom. A teacher should be strict and kind and also not show favoritism. The teacher should watch how the discipline is being handed and make sure that it is being evenly disrupted among the class. The ?last straw? student shouldn?t be the only one punished. A teacher should not expect every student every time to be involved in every activity. Instead a teacher should aim at having more students participating in more activities as much as possible. Look for the natural leaders in the class and get them to work for them by giving them different jobs. This can help the students feel more invested in the class. When students are set to monitor their own behavior it takes the bad person stamp off of the teacher. The teacher should try new things and not be tied down to one plan. If what was motivating the students before to pay attention and preform no longer works the teacher should look for new and exciting ways to engage the class. Always look for what the students are doing right and encourage them to continue those types of behavior. Encourage and affirm as well as discipline will help a teacher gain and hopefully maintain their classroom.
