After completing all of the units, I cannot imagine beginning to teach without knowing the information covered. My expectations were that I would review some grammar and be exposed to some teaching styles, but nothing really new. Instead, I had to think critically about subjects and my mind shifted into a new mode of thinking of ideas for teaching. It also helped me identify and strengthen my weaknesses. On the grammar subjects, I learned that I need to take time to really analyze sentence structures and tenses. When I rush or am not in the right frame of mind, I tend to make mistakes that I would otherwise catch. I will be taking special attention to double-check sentence structures. The language is confusing enough to learn without having to back-track to unlearn mistakes taught. The lesson plans have been an invaluable exercise. I now find myself thinking how I can apply everyday themes to class activities. I can also better anticipate problems in the class. What if there is no board? What activities can I substitute? How can I manage class without paper? Thinking of these scenarios will make it much less of a shock when I begin teaching. The video from Unit 10 really helped with expectations. After viewing it, I have a much better idea of what not to do in class and also how to properly conduct class and develop rapport with the students. It helped separate the different phases of a lesson, the engage, study and activate phases, which confused me greatly in the beginning. Overall, with this course, I will be much better prepared to plan lessons, have more ideas for fun and engaging class activities, and be more comfortable with teaching. The idea of teaching students in an unfamiliar place does not seem intimidating anymore. I quite look forward teaching.
