From this course I feel that I have gained a good foundation of the english language, interesting teaching methods, and great ideas for lesson plans. Having lived in Louisiana for the past 5 years, I have picked up on a lot of the local slang to the point where I don?t even realize that I?m using it. Since the beginning of the course I have paid more attention to my speech. I try to use concise language, speak clearly, and avoid jargon. From watching the video in unit 10, I realized how difficult it must be for learners of english to understand teachers with different accents who speak very fast. Although, I don?t think I have an accent, I do tend to slur my words together, and I?ve tried to be more conscious about that because of this course. Prior to this course, I?ve had no experience as a teacher, so the information about teaching methodology and lesson planning has been extremely helpful. I feel that I have the competence to plan effective activities to go into my lessons. When I have my own class, I plan to place great importance on speaking activities. This course has also helped me analyze the classroom that I am working in to see what types of activities are effective and what ones are not. I am now able to pinpoint specific aspects of why something did or did not work. Before if the student didn?t comprehend a lesson, I wouldn?t know why, but now I can pinpoint what went wrong, whether it be the instructions or something else. This will allow me to assess my own teaching and adjust my lessons accordingly.
