Classroom managementClassroom management plays an important role when trying to achieve optimal results in a class. You as a teacher have to stand your ground or the students will take advantage of you. There are many reasons why there are classroom management problems. The students might be bored, boring teacher, some students find learning English difficult and disrupt the class and hide their lack of confidence behind an excuse of misbehaviour. A few things you can do to avoid classroom management problems are: Enforce rules from the beginning. It's harder to become strict if you have been lenient at first. Don't be a friend, be a mentor. Be someone they can trust and can come to for help. If you are consistent and you clear in your rules and enforce them throughout the year not only when you feel like it the students will have a positive response. Try to get to know your students outside of the classroom environment. It will show them that you care and are interested in them, not only interested in teaching them. They will feel special that you have taken the time out to talk to them It is important to praise good behaviour kind of like Pavlov's salivating dog theory where you condition and reward goo behaviour. Only this time instead of using bells and dogs that are salivating, you could reward good behaviour with stickers. Something they can be proud of and go home and show their parents. Works much better than bribing the students with candy. It's not Halloween every English lesson! Besides I'm not sure if the parents would agree to the candy option. You should never put your students down by saying negative things to them or about them. There are a lot of people out there with self- esteem issues, we need not create more. I have found that if you are kind to your students and do not raise your voice it changes the energy in the room and students will not be screaming and jumping on chairs. (Well there are a few exceptions.) Using "class leaders" is also a way of enforcing good behaviour. Every week the student that has been on their best behaviour or one showing the most visible progress should be the class leader for the week. Make your lesson interesting. It's hard enough learning a new language but learning while trying to stay awake could be worse. Teachers should enjoy the lesson just as much as the students. When you put positive energy in, you get positive results. Use games to try and get the students attention. I'm sure they would be more responsive than if you just standing in front of the class and speaking in a monotone. In the end through your passion, care, love and hopefully a little connection to each student you may obtain optimal results in the classroom. The students would want to learn and will enjoy coming to your class. I am grateful that I have had an opportunity to teach with a great teacher (Jackie) that taught me how to maintain classroom management.
